    Bullseye Bonefishing

    Bone fish on a fly

Shaw Underwood of Bullseye Bonefishing has spent his entire life boating and fishing the waters around Spanish Wells. His skill becomes evident very quickly as he pilots his boat from one fishing spot to the next in pursuit of the “ghost of the flats.”

    The Challenge

Fishing for Bonefish is challenging in the best of conditions because the fish is extremely spooky. They are hunted by both predators of the sea, including shark and barracuda, while having to keep an eye out for the osprey from above. Add to this that the bone fish feed in very shallow waters, sometimes mere inches deep, and you have for yourself a combination of circumstances that produce a very skittish fish. Hook up on one and you realize very quickly why you’re fishing with an 8 weight rod.

    The Gear

Shaw provides top notch gear including Loomis rods equips with Hardy reels and custom tied flies. No need to haul gear, just show up.

The saying “Your only as good as your equipment” is definitely the case when chasing bonefish. Our 2016, 18 foot flats boat is The Bossman TailSpotter. The TailSpotter is a new generation of technical poling skiff designed with shallow water tournament fishing & guide captains in mind.

  • Spanish Wells

    Spanish Wells

    Spanish Wells, Bahamas, arial shot.

Quaint, beautiful, picturesque, just a few terms that come to mind as I consider Spanish Wells. It is a small island just off the northern tip of Eleuthera. Spanish Wells is approximately one square mile with a population just shy of 2000.

The primary industry of the island is fishing, but there are many other services available on the island basically in support of the fishing.

There is a cottage tourist industry on the island. Vacation rentals reflecting the spirit of Spanish Wells are available, some just steps from the beautiful beaches of the island. Once you spend a week on Spanish Wells I’d be willing to bet it won’t be your last visit to this jewel of an island.

    Getting To Spanish Wells

From Nassau the Bahamas Fast Ferries make daily trips to Spanish Wells. To get there by air, you’d fly into North Eleuthera Airport. Airport code ELH. Tel 242-335-1242.

The most cost efficient way to fly there is to fly from Miami on the Bahamian airline, Bahamasair. So the plan is to make your way to Miami airport via your preferred travel method and fly Bahamasair to North Eleuthera. In face this is the best method price wise to get to any of the smaller Bahamian islands.

One of the great challenges for visitors to the Bahamas has always been available flights to the Bahama Islands. This has been the cause of two challenges for potential vacationers.

The first challenge is the cost of flying in to the Bahamian islands has been kept high. Making it more attractive to vacation in other locations.

The second challenge has been the limited number of available seats, at times it is almost impossible to get a seat, much less an affordable seats. The added number of aircraft coming in to Freeport should have a great effect on cost effective travel to the Bahamas both raising the number of available seats and lowering cost of travel to the Bahamas at the same time.

Grand Bahama has so much to offer visitors, from casino gambling, to power white sand beaches, great scuba diving, golf… The list goes on and on.

    The second challenge has as

  • Eleuthera Fishing

One of my favourite ways to spend time on the island of Eleuthera is fishing. How ever you like to fish, it can be done on Eleuthera.

The island has quite a following of fly fisherman who frequent the island. The draw of Eleuthera for the fly fisherman is the fact that there are a number of great flats that can be reached by car. One needs only to google diy fly fishing eleuthera to discover how and where to cast a fly.

While fly fishing is great fun on Eleuthera, I also like to take a spinning rod and stop along the rocks on the eastern side of the island. I have had great fun with a cheep rattle lure about an inch long off the rocks. Cast the lure out and reel it in. I have caught Grouper, Mutton Snapper, Spanish Mackerel, Jacks to name a few. This lure will do, get the blue one. I have also cast those lures at shoals of Jack charging the beach driving bait fist to the shore. What a blast!

There are charter boat captains too. They will be very happy to get you hooked up on what ever is running. There are times when the Exuma sound is so glutted with Mahi that one can just about walk from Eleuthera to Exuma! There are lots of bill fish too.

When the sun gets hot it’s always solo refreshing to slip into the gin clear, refreshing sea. After all people come to Eleuthera to vacation. The main thing is, Have Fun!
